The Calan - Immortal Species

The Calan - silicon-based lifeform, immortal, supposedly omniscient and former guardians of the universe. A lot can be said about these majestic beings, but the majority of known information is subjective and unconfirmed.

One of several alien species encountered by Humanity during the Great Human Migration several thousand years ago, the Calan are the most eminent. Assisting in the migration of human colonies across the galaxy, the Calan were not simply superior in capability and technology, but also driven by a desire to help life thrive in the universe. Right from the very first moment the Chapters of Humanity were spawned, the Calan provided invaluable wisdom to sustain generations.

Hailing from the planet of Sylfaenydd, in the Canol system, what experts, diplomats and historians know of the species is very limited. It is believed they communicate predominantly through telepathic signals in a language called Calonlais. However, this ability is significantly hampered once they leave their planet, resorting to sound vibrations just as humans do. They have distinct appearances; their epidermis the same midnight-blue colour of their home-world, perforated like tree bark; and each Calan have two unique conic structures protruding from the tops of their bodies. Although they have no defined face, a history of Calan-Human encounters is evidence enough of the species' ability to see and sense.

Before humans departed Terra long ago, the activities of the Calan remained a mystery, not to mention their origin. But they became important bastions of peace across civilisations - guardians of individual human-inhabited planets for thousands of years; guiding, protecting and advising their development. In some cases, Calan individuals became government advisors, idolised or even worshipped for the supposed power and influence they held. But in the last millennia, the close relationship between species has gradually deteriorated, culminating in a decision to bring all Calan back to Sylfaenydd. The only ties that remain are the human immigrants who've made a home on the immortal soil.

The leader of the Calan race is Arweindaer, who has remained a stalwart ally of the United Systems Senate throughout recent history. Although they generally remain impartial in galactic activities, involvement in recent events have been necessary to keep some semblance of peace. And now, with the sudden disappearance of millions of people, the Calan are finding themselves pulled back into the fray.

Find out more about the Calan in the upcoming novel "The Immortality Paradox" - first chronicle of the Cosmogenesis Hexad.
